Who is Coach Rose?
My name is Jocelyn Rose Lazo, better known as Coach Rose. I am 27 years old and received my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with emphasis on Cognitive Science and Computer Science from UC Merced in 2021, currently pursuing my Masters in Education and a single-subject teaching credential with hopes to become a high school science teacher. I pride myself on morphing my experiences in behavioral therapy and YEARS of coaching to implement utmost confidence in my players while tailoring to specific learning styles (visual, hands on, instructional, etc.) I love this sport and I want to share this passion with those who have a yearn and urgency to grow within the world of volleyball.
I began my volleyball journey at the age of 5 in the silliest way. My older sister wasn’t home for me to play with and I begged my mom to take me to wherever she was, which lead to my arrival to the Boys & Girls club where city league volleyball was held. As I was screaming and shouting in the stands as my sister’s biggest fan, my soon-to-be life-long mentor Coach Cooper approached me, asked why I was there, and tossed me into a group of kids my age and a T-shirt that was WAY too big for me. From there I followed him to the travel club he and his close friend Derrell Cherf began (Twisters Volleyball Club), thus bringing competitive club volleyball to our little town Merced, CA where I played 12U until I literally grew out of it and played school and club volleyball throughout high school where I was a back row setter and dual-opposite hitter my entire journey.
I then began coaching for Twisters VBC fresh out of high school in 2016 at the age of 18 to focus on my academics while playing a part in my community. I took a brief year in college coaching in Boston, MA for SMASH VBC before finishing my bachelors and moving to sunny San Diego, CA as a head coach for COAST VBC (2022-2024). I then began offering private lessons to get down to the nitty-gritty of technical feedback coaching and absolutely fell in love with the fast results I was seeing in the players I trained.
I find the most pride in working with dedicated, driven players to ensure he or she makes a better team with each season! During off seasons you can find me practically living at the gym working with as many girls as possible before tryouts come back around. During summer of 2023 (my first off-season with COAST VBC), all 5 clients I worked with on a regular basis were drafted to higher teams in comparison to the previous season’s standings.
One of the most foundational parts of my coaching approach is the fact I’ve struggled with anxiety the majority of my life (as many of you may have) so I aim to be a support system, a guide, and someone to keep you accountable to your own goals by seeing things through. For me, volleyball was always a release for my stress as it was a place I could go to do what I love, see my teammates I’ve looked forward to seeing again, and most importantly the pleasure of repetitions and visible progress with each night in the gym. I believe more than half of the game is mentality, and taking charge of your mental health only ever changes things for the better in the long run.
Outside of volleyball I enjoy spending time with my rescue pup Lisboa and my partner Tristen exploring our new paradisal home. I am a member of Newbreak Ocean Beach’s worship team and music where I sing and play guitar, love weight lifting and eating at cool new places. AND THE BEACH OF COURSE!
San Diego has opened a lot of doors for me and I couldn’t be more grateful. As of the 2024-2025 volleyball season, I am currently hosting private/group lessons at WAVE Volleyball where I coach the 10-4’s and the Youth Development Weekend Warriors (SO excited!) We’re only going up from here, let’s grow together!
